I am a retired police chief and served in law enforcement for over 38 years. As a police chief, I always sought ways to keep our community safe from gun violence and keeping stolen guns out of the hands of criminals. After my retirement, I focused my attention on this one issue. I have developed a locking system that can be locked from anywhere in the world using cellular technology and an app downloaded on a cell phone.

I have developed a prototype of an AR-15 with my patented gun locking technology. The reason I used an AR-15 is because its large enough for me to work on the locking mechanisms and it’s been vilified by the anti-gun movement. Nonetheless, my locking technology can be used in any weapon platform – shotguns, pistols, and other rifles.

As mentioned above, the locking technology uses cellular SIM cards, and a mobile app to lock and unlock. For example, if the gun is lost or stolen, the authorized owner can open their app and lock the weapon – from anywhere in the world and even if the firearms is being fired. The technology not only locks the trigger, but completely locks the entire weapon so the unauthorized person is unable to open the weapon. It renders the weapon completely useless to the unauthorized user. Our design also prevents unauthorized users tampering with the weapon. When tampered with, the locking mechanism goes further into the internal part of the gun at which time, no one, not even the authorized user can unlock it.

Here are some facts cited by Smart Tech Challenges Foundation:

  • 6 in 10 Americans say they would consider buying a smart gun (American Journal of Public Health).

  • 500,000 firearms are stolen each year. Gun safety technology could render these weapons unusable, benefitting law enforcement and discouraging theft.

  • Off-duty officers often take their firearms home or store them in their cars, which can lead to accidents or misuse that gun safety technology would help prevent.

  • The Department of Justice released standards for smart guns to help guide R&D and smart gun manufacturing and has planned funding for law enforcement agencies to purchase smart guns. As experts in gun safety, law enforcement is the ideal community to inform standards for smart gun technology.

We have a team of aerospace engineers, cellular experts, app developers and marketing specialists who truly believe in this vision of making our communities safer from gun violence.

We recently unveiled the technology at the Shot Show – the world’s largest outdoors and gun show in Las Vegas last month. To my surprise, over 95% of the people who saw our design believed it will change the gun industry. They liked it because it doesn’t use biometrics (thumb print technology) or RFID technology requiring the user to wear a ring or bracelet – it simply locks up the weapon when its lost or stolen using a mobile app.
